Pre-course assignment yak

Hey everyone!

Now that you have read about our itinerary and FOI in other Yaks, we would like to present our pre-course assignment. Aren’t you ready to start diving in mentally to Perú and Bolivia? These readings and videos will help you start “getting in there.”

In addition to the following prompts and responses to the materials we attached to this yak, we want to learn a bit more about you. Please post a yak with a personal introduction, and write a bit about what motivates you to come on this course. Where are you right now in your life? What inspires you? What are you hoping to bring to our course/group?

Once you have responded to this first part, we would love to hear your thoughts on the following:

    1. Read an excerpt of Chapter 1 of Eduardo Galeano’s, Open Veins of Latin America  (1971). Then watch this video of Calle 13’s song “Latinoamerica” (2010), paying attention to the lyrics (also noting that the introduction to this video is in Quechua!). Then write a response reflecting on any connections you find between these two works. What are your reactions in general?
    2. After reading our FOI post, please share a little bit about a resistance movement from your home community. What are people working toward where you come from? What are the historical roots of violence that people and communities are healing from? What does a more just future look like, where you are from?

We know that this is a decent amount of preparation, but we also know it will be well worth it. We can’t wait to hear your responses! It would be great to have all of them posted by 9/8.

Much love,

Jac, Ben, y Sandy
