My name is Evan Getz, I’m 18 years old and from Portland, OR. I am very lucky to live within a few hours of amazing rock climbing, hiking, and mountain biking, all of which I enjoy. I spent the first two months of summer working 12 hour shifts on an assembly line for Nike. Since then I have been working on learning Spanish to get ready!
I have a younger brother and a pet rabbit, both of whom I enjoy spending time with. I spend a lot of my time outdoors, and I love studying history.
A few years ago I visited Guatemala to do service in impoverished, isolated rural communities. It was there that I had my first taste of Central / South American culture. The people who I met lived very differently then the average American. On a first examination, it may appear that they lived much poorer, unhappy lives. However, getting to know the community quickly made me realize that they were probably more happy than most of modern society. While our culture focuses on consumption and material things, the sense of community I felt while there, and the genuinely happy people I met, convinced me that our way of life might be worth examining with a more critical eye. I hope to return to this type of community on our trek!
I look forward to meeting you all on course!
