Greetings, Springside Chestnut Hill!

It’s exciting to introduce you all to the SCH and Where There Be Dragons Yak Board for the upcoming Taiwan course, “The Art of Food”!

It may seem like the fall semester just began, but winter is fast approaching! In just a few months, you’ll trade the chilly streets of Philadelphia for the tropical climate of Taiwan. Soon you’ll find yourself surrounded by the lush colors and flavors of Taiwanese food and art as you explore the many facets of Taiwanese identity. You’ll spend days and nights with homestay families who will take you in as their own upon meeting you; you’ll engage with remarkable people dedicated to returning Taiwan’s lush natural landscape back to a sustainable state; you’ll engage with artist communities and learn to cook traditional meals; you’ll bounce between vastly different rhythms of life and interwoven stories of ethnically diverse peoples. Along the way, you’ll find this Yak Board to be a powerful forum, where your group can weave together a vibrant narrative of your collective journey—from pre-course preparation, into the field, and even after your return home.

We are thrilled to be a part of your experience in Taiwan. To make it real, the first thing we are asking of you is an introduction. You may be well-acquainted with your peers on this course, but you may not know their expectations, excitement, goals, curiosities, and fears. This forum will provide the space and support for your classmates, instructors, and teachers to share these things. You’ll be amazed, looking back at the end of the course, to witness the ways you’ve grown and changed in just a couple of weeks!
