Today we had Benito Quispe, a local environmentalist, come to give us a talk about issues in the Uyuni region. We returned from three unforgettable days in the salt flats of El Salar with much curiosity and many questions about this incredibly unique part of the world. Our awesome instructors found us the perfect charla to answer all our questions. Benito prepared an hour long presentation on the fragile ecosystem that can be found in the Southern corner of Bolivia. We learned about how plants and animals manage to thrive here despite very little water or oxygen and high amounts of salt in the soil. We also got the opportunity to talk about the threats facing these species from tourism, industry, and climate change.
