Dear Friends and Families,
We are writing to give you an update related to Peru. As you may be aware, yesterday Peru’s President Martin Vizcarra carried out a controversial dissolution of Congress. In response there have been gatherings in Lima, Arequipa, and Cuzco. Of these cities, Cuzco is the nearest location to Urubamba where the student group is located and is about 1.5 hours away. Most related demonstrations have passed off peacefully, which is typical for Peru. That being said, we are monitoring the situation on the ground for any further developments.
Student health, safety, and security are our top priorities at Dragons. We carefully monitor the situation in each of the locations where we run programs, drawing on a number of different resources. Among these resources are ISOS (our risk management provider), the Department of State’s Overseas Security Advisory Council, and our field staff on the ground.
Our field staff are monitoring the situation locally and are in touch with local contacts to receive additional information. Field staff have reported that there have not been demonstrations in Urubamba and the situation seems normal in town. General safety protocols were covered with students during the on-site orientation. In addition, our field staff regularly provide additional safety monitoring and guidance to students. Our field staff have informed students of the situation and reminded them of protocols related to avoiding demonstrations.
We will continue to monitor the situation carefully, drawing on the resources mentioned above and others and we will take appropriate steps should the situation indicate that further action is advisable. Please feel free to reach out to me should you have questions or concerns about the information provided here.
