Transference Poems

During our final reflection ceremony—what we call Transference at Dragons—students were asked to work in groups to select 30 words that describe their experience in Taiwan. After sharing, students narrowed their lists down to 10 words and then collectively wrote poems incorporating these descriptors. Below are the four poems written by our groups:

Taiwan was tight

t’was a delight

breathtaking were the views

therapeutic mountain muse

people warm and inviting

as dragons be uniting

fascinating was the culture

bird’s eye view, like a vulture

tranquil were the vibes

whilst living adventurous lives

animals were elusive when the kids grew abusive

ready for the BBQ

feast your eyes on that orple hue

days remaining are few

what time brings

haven’t a clue

top of the sky awfully blue

chickens in the coop went cooo

we know we won, we thought you knew

Pei, please play us out on your digeridoo

Taiwan was really fun

however, this trip and poem are done

Dear Taiwan,

your towering fog

covered mountains

provide a barrier

from the claustrophobic bustle of Taipei

your mountains preserve the intimate

communities of the Atayal people

their hospitable nature provided opportunities to immerse ourselves

in their independent way of life

our adventurous journeys allowed for uncomfortable situations and different perspectives offering new found insights about the world we live in

we leave you content and well fed

and wish to visit again in the future

until next time…

this natural place

these genuine people

packs like mountains

shoulder-to-shoulder

but I don’t feel stuck

I wake up to your face

and I fall asleep next to you

my stomach full of confusing sweet rice

but it’s savory too

it’s this lingering taste

of the food and the air

these families oriented

around themselves easy

conveniently, still uncomfortably bare

it’s a beautiful place

lovely and cute

I could spend years

telling stories

without ever falling mute

Taiwan was delicious, suspicious, and optimally nutritious

Taiwan was spiritual, educational, and full of ritual

Taiwan was fast-paced, pungent, and child chosen?

Taiwan was homey, bony, and always wowed me

Taiwan was dizzying, busy-ing, and hair-frizzy-ing

Taiwan was serene, green, and relatively clean

Taiwan was ancient, patient, and don’t forget the chained chimp
