We are back from our first trek!!! This yak is being posted after 5 days of amazing hiking, incredible views, and nearly 5,000 meter passes. On the second day we went over our highest pass — over 4,900 meters. It was difficult but everyone conquered it. On the third day we descended into the Sanja Valley. Charlie fished with our “arrieros” (the men who guide our support mules) in the Ilampu River and then we all had fresh trout for dinner. On the fourth day we descended into the head of the Yungas, the tropical cloud forest of the La Paz department. Today we climbed way back up to La Cumbre, where the Cordillera Real Range overlooks the Amazon. It was too cloudy and snowy to see the forests below us, but we knew it was there 🙂
We are happy to now be resting and rejuvenating in the warm Yungas, in the town of Coroico. Tomorrow we head to Tocaña, an Afro-Bolivian community deeper in the yungas, to learn about Afro-Bolivian history and participate in some dance workshops. Until next time!!
