Hello everyone and welcome!
My name is Jesse Moore and I am so grateful and enthused to be one of your instructors for our Dragons journey this spring.
I have spent my past few years living and working nomadically. I have led summer and gap year programs with Dragons all over The Americas and traveled the world in between. Like many of us, the pandemic obligated me to slow down and take a closer look at my life path. Back in the Pacific Northwest with my family this summer, I thought about everything I have learned in far away destinations. I’ve learned about the challenges of drought in the highlands of Guatemala, Andean cosmovision in Bolivia, and the importance of chili in Sasak cuisine with my host mother in Indonesia. Scattered places and people have taught me new perspectives and challenged existing beliefs.
But what of my own backyard? How do I bring this learning closer to home? This past year, I have sought to develop a greater sense of place and purpose here in the United States. This is, of course, an ongoing process and I am very excited to continue this learning together as we delve into the rich history, cultures, and landscapes of the Southwest.
As I prepare for the course, It’s easy to get caught up in all of the physical spaces and activities of the semester. Border excursions, river trips, hatch green chiles, backpacking, desert stars, cacti, canyons, red rocks and the list goes on! As exciting as all of this is, I also try to remind myself of the personal reflection that brings these experiences meaning. Here are some questions I’ve been asking myself lately:
What do I need to do over the next month so that I feel ready to give my whole self on the program? How do I want to grow on this trip? What are my personal goals? How will I bring my passions to this course?
Okay, that’s probably enough for now. Gah! I’m excited. I can’t wait to meet you all.
If you have any questions, thoughts, ideas or concerns whatsoever, don’t hesitate to send me a note. Your instructor team will be here to support you from start to finish.
