Hi! I’m Serena Jampel, and I’m so excited to meet you all! I can’t believe that in just over a week we will embark on our big adventure! Some facts about me: I use she/her pronouns, I am an East Coast gal (absolutely a core tenet of my personality), I can make my tongue into one of those clover thingies (unique, I know), I waaaay overuse parentheses when writing (it’s a debilitating issue), and I broke the Guinness world record for the longest continuous line of tacos (although our record was broken shortly after). Some things that bring me joy: dancing with abandon, journaling and reading, wearing sweatpants, jumping in freezing water, and the NYT mini crossword.
This course constitutes part two of my gap year before college. I have already learned so much from this year and the independence I have grown into, and I can’t wait to further expand my horizons on Dragons this semester. I want to immerse myself in the land and culture of the border region, to listen and learn from the experts both sentient and environmental. Rafting the Rio Grande, learning about the significance of Bear’s Ears National Monument to indigenous communities, and understanding the work of Immigration nonprofits are some of the experiences I am most eagerly anticipating. I have spent so much of the last year mired in the internet and the electronic world, so I am really looking forward to spending time outdoors, enveloped in nature. If it wasn’t clear, I essentially want to live the song “Closer to Fine” by the Indigo Girls, starting with going to the mountains, and hopefully ending somewhere closer to fine 🙂 – cheesy, I know.
I am ecstatic to live and grow together for the next few months! See you soon!
