My name is Izzy and I’m from Durham, North Carolina. In a non-covid world, I would be a sophomore at Goucher College, which is right outside of Baltimore, studying environmental studies and sociology. Although, I am very thankful for the break and for the opportunity to come on this trip! You can probably find me in the kitchen cooking a new recipe, obsessively taking pictures of my pet bunny (her name is Riri), listening to a true crime podcast, or pretending I’m on the show Survivor. Here’s a question: What is making food for every meal going to look like?
After watching the Harvest of Empire documentary, what really stuck out to me was how strongly it foregrounded the way that the U.S. government has relied on Latin American countries for labor and the building of capitalism for centuries. The pattern of creating the conditions for immigration to happen and then rejecting and discriminating against the immigrants once they have fulfilled this need is so deeply ingrained in our politics and culture. I’m looking forward to learning more about this and hearing what you all think!
In person soon!
