Hi! I’m Laura and I’m from Suwanee, Georgia. I’m currently taking my sophomore year off from college at Kenyon where I’m planning on majoring in Classics or Art History! Besides looking forward to this trip, I’ve spent the last few months interning on a Congressional campaign and volunteering. I haven’t done any camping at all so y’all might have to bear with me…

My chapter covers Colombians and Panamanians coming to the United States in the 1960s-1970s. In the 1990s, two very prominent Colombians in the immigrant community in New York City were murdered–demonstrating how the civil unrest all the way back in Colombia made its way to the United States. However, the NYPD was dragging their feet. The Latino population organized numerous marches and demonstrations meant to put pressure on the police, and eventually Latino police officers did solve one of the murders, paving the way for less tension in the Colombian community.

So excited to meet all of you!
