A few important things to do

Greetings to you, dear students.

It is drawing closer to the time when we will be packing up our bags, putting on our hiking shoes, and hugging our loved ones goodbye as we head out on an adventure that will take us both to the other side of the world and deeper into ourselves.

In order to help us both mentally and physically prepare for the journey, here are some short tasks that we are requesting everyone to do before we depart.

1) Introduce yourself on this yak board! All us instructors have given you a short overview of who we are, but we are so curious to know all about all of you! Please just write a few sentences about who you are and where you come from, as well as what excites/interests/motivates you about spending the summer in Senegal! Please go ahead and do that as soon as you read this message. It should only take you a few minutes.

2) Keep an eye on the news. Look out for stories about Senegal that make the international news. What kind of stories do we hear about? How is Senegal represented?

3) Find an interesting article and bring it with you. Think about an aspect of Senegal that interests you and find an article about it. It could be related to:

  • Music

  • Sports

  • Islam

  • The culture of “teranga”

  • Development issues

  • Recent political events

  • Wildlife and environment

  • Any other aspect of the culture!

We’ll be asking each of you to lead a group discussion based on the article you choose so remember to bring a printed copy.

In the next week or so, one of your instructors will be reaching out to you for a get-to-know-you phonecall and to answer any questions you may have. In the meantime, please post any questions you have about any aspect of preparing or packing for the course on this Yak board! If you are wondering about something, you can be sure that others are too!

With blessings,

Babacar, Samba and Claire
