My name is Ruby, and I use she/her pronouns, I’m currently writing from my home in Brooklyn. This coming fall I will be going to Emerson College in Boston for Theatre so that will be pretty epic, hopefully. A few fun facts about me is that I went to a farm camp for 6 years… yeah, when I was 11 I decided I wanted to spend my summers waking up at 7am sometimes 6am to do chores. But I loved it so much I kept coming back and I have lots of stories about it that I love sharing. I love playing card games, swimming, and to be completely honest I just had a brain fart so I can’t think of anything right now. I just like spending time with people and am always down to go discover new things.
I decided to join the Good Life this summer because I loved the thought of being on the Lake for days, and as I read more into it, learning about what else the Lake had to offer and what activities we’d be doing I got so excited. It seemed to have a mix of everything and was just the perfect thing to experience after this year of constantly being on zoom or google meets. Also did I mention I like swimming? Being right by a Lake or pond is always a top interest of mine when I go traveling with my family so when I saw Lake Superior I was very excited.
The Food Sovereignty episode of the “All My Relations” Podcast opened my eyes so much, I listened to it earlier this week and I’m still reflecting on what was said. There were a couple of moments that really stood out to me, it’s definitely not word for word so sorry about that, one moment I remember and that made me have an “ohhh” kinda moment was when Valerie talks about being in nature and forest bathing, how that can decrease stress, because for me personally I often find myself most relaxed when I find myself surrounded by trees or nature. This moment that I’ll talk about, was one of my favorites, where they discuss how we can practice some of the principles of food sovereignty and Valerie says how you could harvest one thing and just commit to it, become an ally to it. That really made me think about all the fruits that I like and I just remember thinking “I wanna commit to raspberries”.
Anyway that’s a little bit about me, why I decided to join the Good Life and my thoughts on the podcast, it’s kind of a lot looking back at everything I wrote, kind of ironic cause I’m not much of a talker, but I think because of Covid it made me much more of an extrovert than I remember. Or maybe this is just one of those cases where I’m able to write a lot on paper, or in this case, online, and then in person I won’t have much to say, guess we’ll find out. But I’m super excited to meet everyone and I included a picture of me with the sunset on the beach a few seconds before I decided to sprint towards it.
